How giving up bread for Lent could kinda change your life forever
Remember how the old adage goes, “Be careful what you wish for, it might just become true”? My nana use to say that to me all the time when I would wish my sister dead. Relax, relax, I was only 8 and she was drawing all over my Jason Donovan posters with pink crayons, besides, it wasn’t what I really wanted at all, hence, it never happened. You see, there’s an undeniable magic laying dormant within each and everyone of us, a power so strong that means we can achieve our true heart’s desire with nothing more than indomitable will and positive thinking.
Traditionally, during Lent, which kicked off on Ash Wednesday, many Christians commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penitence. I don’t believe ‘God’, whoever or whatever that may mean to you (my God is Mother Earth because she helped me to grow a big bouncing, healthy baby despite the fact I was totally exhausted and probably under nourished after years of socially (accepted) hedonism and who constantly manages to miraculously heal my many wounds, sicknesses and injuries). Your God may be called Allah, Hari, Buddha; whatever or whoever that is for you, they never wanted you to suffer for your sins, instead they lovingly created paths of liberation to free you from the shackles of bad habits and attitudes of life.
You see when you give up a bad habit, whether it be eating bread, smoking cigarettes, checking your email compulsively, playing computer games, over exercising, never exercising, bitching, gossiping, complaining, you are accessing the power of the soul, planting positive intentions and creating space in your life for new possibilities and positive habits to form. Your mind has a measureless capacity to affect the quality and content of you life.
I’m not just talking about a mere wish here, “I wish I had her figure’ ain’t gunna cut it I’m afraid. I’m referencing a desire so strong that grows directly from the heart, it is void of lust, envy or greed and vibrates with love.
Maybe you deeply desire to be peaceful and content, crave financial security for yourself and your family, dream of having a baby, to give your child an excellent education, loose 3 stone and live a healthy life, write a novel, kick a drug addiction or realise the job of your dreams. If you chuck out your bad habits, summon your will power and allow this heart’s desire to fill your entire being, it could just become your reality.
Try this short exercise everyday for 40 days
Laying or sitting in a comfortable position, relax your physical body for around 5 minutes by breathing deeply. Once you feel truly relaxed allow your deepest heart’s desire to evolve from the centre of your chest and fill your entire soul. Repeat this desire to yourself 3 times in the present tense, as if your prayer had already been answered.
"I am peaceful and content”
“I have created a safe and secure home and future for my family”
“I love my job"
Say it with as much strength, love and faith as you can muster, because as Glinda, the good witch once told us "You had the power all along my dear”.
Never underestimate yourself, you CAN move mountains.
