Yoga retreats for pregnancy
Take time to look after and nourish yourself during this very special time.
Photos of beautiful Gwen who has joyfully practised yoga throughout her pregnancy and enjoyed being part of Bilbao Yoga Retreats.
What with half my friends and yoga students pregnant, or having just given birth, I thought it was time to devise a system so that I could open-up my yoga retreats to pregnant students also - because truly, there has never been such an appropriate time to nourish your body, relax your mind and let go of any anxieties and worries. This is the perfect time to find a strong connection with your intuition and the unique power of Mother Nature. When I was pregnant with Isabella, it was yoga that centred me, strengthened me, empowered me - without it I am not sure how I would have survived, what are, a very long (special but, boof, they are long) 9 months.
My dear friend Gwen, pictured above has been a yoga lover for many years, using asana, meditation and pranayama practices to help calm her busy mind and ease the stresses of a hectic schedule. Gwen has beautifully adapted her practice for this wonderful time, developing her feminine flow along with her ever-growing bump. Gwen, also joined us on a weekend yoga retreat from where she left energised, full of joy and ready to take on the world with fresh enthusiasm and zest. “Pregnancy yoga and the yoga retreat I attended with Kat has not only helped me cope with the aches and pains that come with pregnancy but has also provided me with a way to deal with my fears, anxieties and uncertainties that I have experience throughout my pregnancy journey. Above all, the yoga classes have given me the opportunity to enjoy the unconditional love and deep bond that I have with my baby.”
What to expect on retreat when you’re expecting…
Thursday - On arrival day, after a nice rest, pregnant students will enjoy a relaxed private class with me to go through all pregnancy variations, what not to do, what’s a good idea to do, using props and how to get comfortable so when it comes to Fridays class you are well prepared.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday - 8am - So, normally all yoga students rise and meet on the terrace for hot water, lemon and ginger before yoga, they don’t eat breakfast until after class. However, now is not the time for you to be adhering to these rules, so If you decide to wake up (you might just want to lay in until 12) then of course if you want bananas with peanut butter and gherkins on toast before class you can have. Students discuss all their needs with Kat on the Thursday, which are met with love and consideration throughout retreat.
08.30m - Mindful stroll to the yoga studio by the sea breathing in fresh air for you and baby (passing many cafes with loos on the way).
09.00 - 10.30 Yoga, meditation and relax.
Meditation - During the yoga class we always start with meditation, during which you’ll be guided through heart womb meditation.
Pranayama - You will be invited to adapt your usual pranayama practices to more soothing techniques, you’ll be introduced to Golden Thread Pranayama and Cosmic Breath Recharge, both of which are great tools for use throughout pregnancy and those early months when exhaustion may kick in.
Yoga - A feminine, flowing practice will be enjoyed with pregnancy sun salutations and safe variations for warrior, floor and finishing sequences. Kat will guide you every single step of the way and you only have to do as much or as little as you want to. Classes conclude with sound practices and yoga nidra which is deep relaxation.
11.00 - Breakfast .
18.00 - 19.30 - Restorative yoga, meditation and relax.
20.30 - Dinner.
Food - Delicious, hearty and healthy vegetarian meals but you are also welcome to sample local cuisine.
So, pregnant ladies, if you want to take a rest from swollen ankles, heart burn, boredom and exhaustion please join us here in the Basque country for some well deserved TLC. Read more and book here.
To put any mothers-to-be minds at rest it’s probably best just to give a quick over view of my qualifications. Alongside my standard yoga training I completed my pregnancy yoga teacher training with Uma Dinsmore-Tuli in accordance with Yoga Alliance UK (this accreditation demonstrates excellent standards as set by Yoga Alliance UK) and assisted internationally renown teacher Tara Lee at the Life Centre in Notting Hill, London with her very popular pregnancy and mother and baby classes. I have also been running private and group pregnancy yoga classes in Spain for over two years. This said you MUST seek the advice of your doctor before you come on retreat to ensure that yoga, meditation, walking, flying are all suitable for you.
